Sunderland is preparing to welcome in 2027 with a free, double fireworks spectacular and evening of entertainment at Keel Square.
A star-studded line up is planned for the New Year’s Eve celebrations on Thursday 31 December, with TV personality and DJ Gok Wan headlining the stage on Keel Square and two stunning firework displays lighting up the night sky.
Celebrations will get underway on Keel Square from mid-afternoon, with a programme of fun family entertainment and music, before the early evening fireworks display at 6.30pm.
An exciting line up of DJ sets will then warm up the crowd, with Gok Wan taking to the stage before the midnight firework display marks the new year in a spectacular finale to the evening.
Fairground rides, festive light installations and food traders serving seasonal treats and warming drinks will add to the celebrations throughout the day and into the evening.
Christmas will officially arrive in Sunderland when the city’s annual Christmas Lights Switch-On takes place on Thursday 19 November, with Hits Radio’s Steve & Karen hosting an evening of live entertainment, music, event partner Sunderland Empire’s pantomime characters and family activities on the main stage before the city centre lights up; with a full programme to be announced closer to the event.
Councillor Ciera Hudspith, Sunderland City Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Heritage, said: “This year’s festive programme promises something for everyone, with fantastic events and attractions bringing extra sparkle to Sunderland city centre throughout the winter months.
“From our Christmas Lights Switch-On and festive activities to our New Year’s Eve programme, we’re looking forward to welcoming residents and visitors alike to enjoy everything the city has to offer.
“I’d urge everyone to save the dates – 19 November for our Christmas Lights Switch-On and 31 December for our fabulous fireworks displays – and stay tuned for more exciting updates.”
