History of Riverside Sunderland

Once an industrious hub, Riverside Sunderland is forged on land that was once home to shipyards and coal mines… A place where hardworking hands powered heavy industry and where the ‘can do’ spirit that still prevails today was born.

Coalmines stood at the northern side of the site, while – to the south of the river – dray horses dragged carts containing beer, brewed by Vaux and shipped out around the world. Decades on, this naturally blessed site, with the most rugged and dramatic river views, is once again driving Sunderland forward. Momentum has grown, buildings have risen, forgotten green spaces have been revitalised and people are flocking to Riverside Sunderland, a place that is central to a vision to double the number of people living and working in the city centre by 2030.

Led by Sunderland City Council, backed by £100m of investment from Legal & General, and brought to life by passionate Sunderland people who are now working and playing at this transforming site, Riverside Sunderland is realising its vast potential. And the energy that is regenerating Riverside Sunderland is flowing into the wider city centre. The whole place is alive – changing.
